Remembrance Day Poppies

The MACQUARIE HILLS POTTERS ′ studio is located in one of the boy′s dormitories in what was once the MASONIC SCHOOL at Baulkham Hills. The school was set up in 1923 for the children of Masons who were killed in World War One and World War Two.

The children, from all over NSW, lived and were schooled here at no expense to their families. Each year on Remembrance Day a ceremony is held at the end of the avenue of trees – one planted in memory of each of the soldiers who died, often by their children.

Many years ago the potters, who now occupy dormitory 16B, began making bright red ceramic poppies to be placed around the memorial for this day. They have proved very popular and are often purchased by those who attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony, many of them former students of the Masonic School and their descendants. Some of the poppies have been taken to the war cemeteries in Gallipoli and France. They are also popular with other local councils and schools.
